Pedernales Wreck

Also known as: Pedernales · Pedernalis

The lake tanker Pedernales was hit amidships by a torpedo from U-156 on 16 February 1942 and drifted until she ran aground. Her intact bow and stern were cut away, joined and sent off for refitting, while the ruined midsection stayed behind in Aruba. After years as a gunnery target it now lies broken up in about 7 to 8 m of water. Divers can recognise cabin sections, wash basins, toilets and the ship's piping between coral heads. The shallow depth hides a rich site, with grouper, angelfish, stingrays, turtles and schools of grunts and goatfish.
