California Wreck

Also known as: SS California

The wooden steamer struck the rocks on the night of 23 September 1891, and the California Lighthouse was later named after her. Little of the ship remains intact; the pieces are scattered and overgrown with large coral formations and reef fish. The wreck lies no deeper than about 14 m, but the exposed north coast brings strong currents and surge. Dive operators do not visit it regularly and only go out when the sea is calm.
