Biatabang

Also known as: The Hanging Gardens of Babylon · Babylon

This wall off Ternate Island is lined with overhangs and covered in colourful soft corals, sponges and lush hard coral in the shallows. Alor Tanapi uses it as a check dive and as an introduction to local life, because Alorese fishermen place woven bamboo fish traps called bubu among the corals and free dive without fins, using homemade glass goggles. Napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, dogtooth tuna and trevally are seen along the wall, with schools of fusiliers and anthias in the current. Macro fans can look for Halimeda ghost pipefish, frogfish and nudibranchs in the soft corals.
