Arutanga Passage
Also known as: Aruntanga Passage
Every vessel entering or leaving the Aitutaki lagoon uses this passage, yet its sides are covered in hard and plate corals that rise many metres above the gullies between them. Divers start on the reef top at around 8 m and can follow a circular route down to sandy patches near 30 m. Whitetip reef sharks rest in caves and on the sand under the reef, and Napoleon wrasse hover nearby without approaching too closely. In the current flowing through the pass, eagle rays and green and hawksbill turtles are often seen. Emperors, angelfish, parrotfish and moray eels in the crevices complete the picture.
