The Franconian Lake District lies in Middle Franconia, Bavaria, roughly 50 km southwest of Nuremberg, spanning parts of the districts of Ansbach, Roth, and Weissenburg-Gunzenhausen. It consists of seven lakes with a combined surface area of about 20 km2: Grosser Brombachsee, Altmuehlsee, Kleiner Brombachsee, Rothsee, Igelsbachsee, Hahnenkammsee, and Dennenloher See. The lakes were created mainly as part of the Danube-Main water transfer project, alongside a tourism and recreation purpose.
