Franconian Lake District

The Franconian Lake District (Fraenkisches Seenland) is a group of seven lakes in Middle Franconia, Bavaria, about 50 km southwest of Nuremberg, created through a 1970s water-transfer project and developed for recreation and water sports.

The Franconian Lake District lies in Middle Franconia, Bavaria, roughly 50 km southwest of Nuremberg, spanning parts of the districts of Ansbach, Roth, and Weissenburg-Gunzenhausen. It consists of seven lakes with a combined surface area of about 20 km2: Grosser Brombachsee, Altmuehlsee, Kleiner Brombachsee, Rothsee, Igelsbachsee, Hahnenkammsee, and Dennenloher See. The lakes were created mainly as part of the Danube-Main water transfer project, alongside a tourism and recreation purpose.
