Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress

Also known as: B-17G · B-17 airplane wreck

Badly damaged on a raid in November 1944, the Flying Fortress reached Vis and the pilot set it down on the sea close to the shore near Rukavac. The plane floated for a while before it sank to the bottom largely intact. Thanks to its depth it is better preserved than some museum aircraft, and guns, engines and instruments are still clearly visible. In good visibility its outline can be seen from about 30 m on the way down. The dive needs trimix training.
