Davíðsgjá

Also known as: Davidsgja

Davíðsgjá is a crack in the lava bed of lake Þingvallavatn, a short drive from Silfra, and local divers count it among their favourites even though it is far less known. You walk straight into the lake and swim across shallow water until the fissure opens below you, its top already some 7 m under the surface. From there it becomes deeper and wider, with a bed of broken rock and two parallel cracks. Because it lies open to the lake, the water is usually warmer than in Silfra, visibility depends more on the weather, and trout often swim alongside divers. For now the site is visited by divers only.
