Le Chilton

The Chilton was a 76 m British cargo ship launched in 1879. Loaded with wheat, it was driven onto the rocks of the breakwater on 30 May 1888 after a mistake with the navigation lights and sank a few metres away. The hull is still whole, with parts rising 5 to 6 m, and lies off La Madrague in front of the port. It is easy to find along the jetty, but access from land needs a port permit.
