Les Jorasses

Also known as: Jorasses · Petites Jorasses · Grandes Jorasses · Petite Jorasse · Grande Jorasse

An underwater mountain of lava flows off the north side of Pointe Burgos, named after the Alpine peaks, with its top at about 14 m and its foot at 60 m. Exposed to current, it is a dive for experienced divers with big schools of bigeye jacks.

The Jorasses continue the Pointe Burgos reef further offshore as a stairway of coral plateaus around a large white-sand amphitheatre. Sources distinguish the Petites Jorasses, terraces and a wall between roughly 10 and 30 m, from the Grandes Jorasses, where an impressive wall drops from about 40 to 60 m among large coral heads and canyons. Sponges and corals cover the lava, and schools of bigeye trevally, groupers, king mackerel, barracuda, southern stingrays and turtles are typical. Because the site lies away from the coast it is often swept by current. Alpha Plongée starts the dive from the Crique Abricot and warns divers to keep enough air for the long swim back.
