Commandante Manoel Lourenço

Also known as: Comandante Manoel Lourenço

The ship was unloading supplies and prisoners for the penal colony at Dois Rios when a south-westerly storm drove her over the reef between the islets. Because the prison kept boats out of the bay until 1994, the wreck stayed off the dive circuit for decades, although inmates salvaged metal from it. The stern lies by Ilha da Armação with both propeller shafts still parallel, and the shafts lead to the steam engine lying on its side. Beyond the engine, a deeper and sheltered sand basin holds most of the wreckage, including a winch and a bollard, and two badly decayed boilers lie further towards the bow. Dois Rios is the best shelter on the outer side of the island, and the wreck is rated suitable for divers of every level.
