Tres Cocos
Also known as: Tres Cocos Canyons
The name is Spanish for three coconuts, and the mooring lies only a short boat ride from San Pedro just beyond the protection of the reef. Straight coral spurs and narrow sand-floored canyons run out to sea like furrows, their walls painted red and purple by sponges and algae. Soft corals sway around the mooring line, and harlequin bass, trumpetfish, porkfish, grey angelfish and yellowtail snapper are common. Spotted eagle rays and great barracuda hunt in the deeper grooves, dolphins are met here more often than elsewhere, and sea turtles gather in the mating season.
