Pillar Coral
Also known as: Pillar Corals · Pillars
Pillar Coral is similar to the nearby Sandbar reef, with a rubble apron of soft corals around the mooring and rippled sand in the channels. Its namesake is a cluster of pillar coral that rises like castle towers above the spurs, with a goby cleaning station where groupers come to be cleaned. About a dozen large black and Nassau groupers live here and approach divers closely, a habit linked to past fish feeding. Schools of yellow chub, bar jacks and yellowtail snapper swim above the reef, and groups of spotted eagle rays sometimes pass. As part of the reserve, the site has a fee and requires a local guide.
