Washing Machine

Also known as: Washing Machine Verde Island

The site is a series of small gullies and swim-throughs, usually described as seven, all of them fairly shallow. When the tide runs, the current flows through the passages and collides with itself, pushing divers one way and then the other and sometimes downward. At slack water the canyons can be explored calmly, revealing healthy rock formations with basket and siphon sponges, sea fans, sea whips, tubeworms and feather stars. A running current brings clouds of anthias, schooling fish and pelagics such as tuna, trevally and reef sharks. Operators recommend it only for divers experienced in current, with a guide, and suggest a reef hook and full wetsuit.
