Mary's Place

Also known as: Marys Place

Mary's Place lies on the south side of Roatan near French Harbour, close to Barefoot Cay. A geological event long ago cracked an elbow-shaped section of the reef plateau away from the rest, leaving a system of narrow fissures that run from about 9 m down to around 37 m. Divers usually wind through the crevices, past black coral, sea fans and large sponges, before working back up to the plateau. Schools of horse-eye jacks gather in the main fissure, and the shallow top holds sea rods, sea plumes and the occasional seahorse. Because the south shore is often rough, many operators from the north side only visit when the wind turns. The dive needs good buoyancy control and is not offered to novice divers.
