El Aguila

Also known as: El Aguila Wreck · The Eagle

El Aguila worked as a freighter in the western Caribbean and first sank near Utila before it was salvaged and scuttled off Roatan as an artificial reef in 1997. It landed intact, but Hurricane Mitch split it into three sections the following year. Divers usually descend to the stern, cross the scattered cargo holds and finish at the upright bow and its mast, which is covered in sponges. Large groupers, green morays, snappers and southern stingrays live around the wreckage, and garden eels live in the sand. The dive normally ends on the nearby wall, where seahorses are sometimes found during the ascent.
