Astron Wreck
Also known as: El Astron · Astron Shipwreck
Most sources describe the Astron as a Russian-owned bulk freighter of roughly 120 to 127 m that hit the reef in a storm while carrying corn to Cuba. The ship split apart: the bow stands out of the sea and can be seen from the beaches of Bávaro, and the stern section lies on its side below. The broken midship section, battered by storms, is now overgrown with stag-horn and elk-horn coral, sponges and sea whips. Barracuda, moray eels, snappers, rays and turtles are regularly reported around the steel, and the huge propeller is a favourite photo stop. Dives usually stay around 12 m, and conditions depend on current and surge, so operators visit it in calm weather.
