Airport Outer Reef

Also known as: Airport Perimeter Reef · The airport reef · 機場外礁 (Chinese (Traditional, Taiwan))

Divers enter beside a triangular rock that sticks out of the sea a short way off the runway. Currents run here often and change direction around the rock, so the usual plan is to go in up-current, drift around part of the pinnacle and come up on the down-current side. The current packs the fish into dense schools of fusiliers, surgeonfish and barracuda, and pelagic species pass by. Gorgonian sea fans, yellow soft corals and stands of sea whips cover the slopes down to the bottom at around 30 m. Soldierfish, angelfish, pufferfish, porcupinefish and several kinds of sweetlips add to the reef life.
