South Neptune Islands
Also known as: South Neptune Island · South Neptunes
The South Neptune Islands are two islands of 35 and 37 m height, and the southern one, also called Lighthouse Island, carries a light tower and the abandoned keepers' cottages. They lie further from Port Lincoln than the northern group, so day boats usually go to the North Neptunes, while liveaboards can anchor here. A diver writing for DAN's Alert Diver found the shark photography better here than at the North Neptunes, where schools of trevally crowd the cages. Certified divers can descend in a cage that rests on a seafloor of kelp and seagrass, and fur seals breed on the rocky shores that attract the sharks. The motor vessel Yandra ran aground at this group in dense fog in 1959.
