Mestizo Reef
Mestizo Reef commemorates Columbus's arrival at Guanaja in 1502 during his fourth voyage. Life-size figures of Columbus and of Lempira, the Lenca leader honoured as a Honduran hero, were placed on the reef together with a cannon, a bell, vases and other objects recalling first contact. Sport Diver gives their depth as about 65 feet and calls it one of the island's more unusual dives. The monument celebrates the mixed heritage of modern Guanaja and its ties to the sea.
