Strýtan
Also known as: Big Strýtan
Strýtan is a mineral spire that started to grow at the end of the last ice age and is still fed by its vent. Its foot lies at roughly 65 to 70 m and its top at 15 m, so divers only see the upper part of a chimney that one operator puts at about 55 m tall. Fresh water of more than 70 °C still streams out near the top, and divers can sense the warmth close to the vent. Plumose anemones in many colours cover the cone together with nudibranchs, sponges and starfish, while cod, pollock, wolffish, lumpsuckers and starry rays move around it. Iceland made it its first protected underwater area in 2001, so good buoyancy control is essential.
