Irako
Also known as: Irako Maru · Irako Wreck
The Irako was built to keep the Japanese fleet supplied with food and is around 147 metres long. The wreck is still largely intact, with its deck lying at roughly 28 to 35 metres and the sand at about 40 to 45 metres. It is often credited with the best visibility of the bay's wrecks, so the size of the ship is easy to take in. Groupers, tuna, scorpionfish and lionfish live around it, turtles shelter in the twisted superstructure, and jacks gather at the bow. Trained wreck divers can enter the holds, the wheelhouse and the engine room, and dive centres recommend deep and wreck training as well as nitrox.
