Punta Arena Canyons

Also known as: Small Cut · Punta Arenas · Punta Arena Caverns

Local guides call this site Small Cut because boats pass through a narrow gap in the barrier reef to reach it, which is hard in rough weather. The ridge tops lie at roughly 18 to 23 metres, and between them run sand channels, caves and vertically walled canyons. The highlight is a tunnel with a triangular entrance that narrows to single file and winds through the reef to an exit at about 30 metres, with dark sections around a bend. Its walls are crusted with sharp red algae, and a school of glassy sweepers waits near the exit, while turtles and nurse sharks sometimes rest inside.
