El Peñón

Also known as: Peñón I · Peñón II

El Peñón, 'the rock', is named after the rocks along its small walls and lies in front of the national park on the way to Saona. Three buoyed sections along the reef are usually dived back to back, often as drift dives. Hard and soft corals, barrel and tube sponges and sand flats at the reef edge give cover to moray eels, lobsters, frogfish and many reef fish. Turtles, eagle rays, southern stingrays and nurse sharks are regular visitors, and a hammerhead is occasionally reported. Because fishing is banned in the park, fish life is richer than on the reefs near Bayahibe.
