Mucky Mosque

Also known as: Masjid Ampera

The name comes from the village mosque on the shore, whose call to prayer divers can hear before night dives. A steep slope of dark sand, river stones, rubble and scattered corals runs down to about 27 m, and the site is littered with man-made debris such as fish traps, tyres and clothing that critters use as shelter. The bay is famous for rhinopias, including the paddle-flap scorpionfish, and the site also produces frogfish, ghost pipefish, seahorses, harlequin and Coleman shrimp, zebra crabs, bobtail and pygmy squid and wunderpus. Spanish dancers and stargazers are also reported, and night dives are considered especially rewarding.
