Dive center Island Bay Divers
Island Bay Divers is based in Island Bay, Wellington, New Zealand, on the Cook Strait coast. The centre dives in and around Taputeranga Marine Reserve, a four-kilometre stretch from Princess Bay to just beyond Te Kopahou Visitor Centre. The centre proposed the reserve in 1989 and later installed a snorkel trail there, one of only three in New Zealand. Local trips visit the South Coast, harbour and Makara, with Saturday club dives aiming for a different site each week; trips also run to Lake Taupo, Poor Knights and Fiordland. The centre teaches snorkel diving in a course combining theory with a session in a heated five-metre pool, and offers freediving training. Island Bay Divers has operated since 1985 and has been owned and run by Tim Walshe for over 35 years. The centre also provides equipment sales, hire and servicing, with cylinder testing completed within 24 hours.
