Mchaco

Also known as: Bird Island Mchaco

Mchaco is a large rock standing in open water off the eastern tip of Mohéli, painted white by the seabirds that nest on it. Below the surface its rocky flanks carry coral and fall away as a reef slope from about 10 m to 40 m. The local dive centre and a dive travel operator both rank it among the best dives of the island. Whitetip and grey reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse and big schools of tuna, trevally and barracuda are the main attractions, with bannerfish, parrotfish, wrasses and fusiliers around the coral heads. Currents can be strong, so divers need good air and decompression management. The trip is run as a day excursion and can be combined with watching green turtles nest at night.
