LVT(A)-4

Amtracs like this one carried troops across the reef during the invasion of Saipan and later moved supplies and wounded. Archaeologists found battle modifications on this vehicle, such as an added gun, a boilerplate shield for the .50-calibre gun and extra plating to protect the bow from coral. The hull is nearly intact with the stern buried in sand, while the turret has sunk into the deck and the howitzer is gone. The added machine-gun port now shelters lionfish and wrasses, and the site is a nursery for small fish.
