Wreck of the Cali

Also known as: Cali Wreck

The Cali, a four-masted schooner of about 220 ft, went down in heavy weather in 1944 just north of George Town harbour. She was later blasted apart because she obstructed shipping. What is left today, such as ribs, winches, boilers and pieces of hull plating, is spread over the sand and covered in sponges and coral. Divers reach it in a short swim of under 70 yards from the shore, and silver tarpon live around the wreck.
