Shoan Maru
Also known as: Chinsen Maru · Chin Sen Maru · Showan Maru
The wreck is thought to be the Shoan Maru, a 5,624-ton steamer built in 1937 and later requisitioned for the war. After a torpedo hit offshore she was towed into the lagoon, where further air attacks during the Battle of Saipan sank her at anchor. The hull lies on its starboard side and is badly broken, but the bow, the stern, a central deck section, the reciprocating engine and the masts can still be made out. Fish life is rich, with snappers, schools of goatfish and stonefish, and whitetip reef sharks often rest beneath the broken plates. A Korean memorial stone stands at the site, and Saipan's tourist submarine passes along the wreck.
