Tarpon Reef

Tarpon Reef is a medium-depth spur-and-groove system on the south side of the Brac whose main attraction is a group of several dozen tarpon, some up to about five feet long, that gather in the tunnels, crevices and channel. Approached slowly, the fish stay calm, which makes them a classic photo subject. A stand of pillar coral rising from a knoll nearby, together with elkhorn and star corals and plenty of soft corals, adds to the scenery. Nurse sharks sometimes rest in the undercuts, and horse-eye jacks, triggerfish, tiger groupers, barracuda and parrotfish patrol the ridges. Visibility here is described as variable.
