Hol Chan Cut
Also known as: The Cut · Hol Chan
Hol Chan, Mayan for little channel, is a narrow break in the barrier reef roughly 9 metres deep, and the reserve around it was created in 1987. Since fishing stopped, groupers, snappers, schoolmasters and grunts gather along the channel walls in large numbers, and moray eels peer out of the many holes in the rock. Tidal currents run through the cut and can be strong at peak flow, so divers keep close to the walls where the uneven rock breaks the current. Divers with more experience can continue out to the drop-off beyond the cut, where eagle rays may pass. The reserve charges an entry fee, and the cut is one of the few spots along the reef considered suitable for night dives.
