Seven islands between Tuscany and Corsica, led by Elba and Giglio, protected as a national park, with granite shoals, red coral and gorgonians, groupers and barracuda, and wrecks from shallow to technical depths.
The Tuscan Archipelago comprises seven main islands between the Tuscan coast and Corsica: Gorgona, Capraia, Elba, Pianosa, Giglio, Montecristo and Giannutri. All are part of the Arcipelago Toscano National Park, established in 1996 and covering about 56,776 hectares of sea. Elba is the diving hub, with sites such as the shallow Elviscot wreck off Pomonte, the Fetovaia shoal and the Capo Fonza shoal with red coral in sheltered cracks. Giglio has granite walls and shoals and long-established dive centres offering recreational and technical dives. Off Giannutri a cargo wreck lies at 48 to 60 metres. The nearby Formiche di Grosseto islets rise from about 100 metres and are known for barracuda and groupers. Park rules restrict diving in some zones.
