Egadi Islands

Italia

Islands off Trapani inside one of the largest marine protected areas in the Mediterranean, offering dozens of dive sites with Posidonia meadows, the caves of Marettimo and ancient Roman wreck remains.

The Egadi Islands lie off the west coast of Sicily near Trapani and comprise Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo plus the islets of Formica and Maraone. The Isole Egadi Marine Protected Area was established by ministerial decree in December 1991 and covers about 54,000 hectares, making it the largest marine reserve in Italy. Its management lists 76 dive sites, ranging from shallow sites to deep dives, caves and underwater archaeological sites, including the area of the naval battle between Romans and Carthaginians northwest of Levanzo and a Roman wreck at Cala Minnola. The caves of Marettimo are especially known among divers. The reserve protects a large Posidonia oceanica meadow, and loggerhead turtles, dolphins and the rare monk seal occur. Diving is organised through authorised local dive centres. Source: Wikipedia, Parks.it, Italian Ministry of Environment, Italia.it
