Sharm El Sheikh is a resort city at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, adjacent to Ras Muhammad National Park, together forming one of Egypt's best-known reef-diving regions.
Sharm El Sheikh lies in Egypt's South Sinai Governorate at the entrance to the Gulf of Aqaba. Roughly 12 km away, Ras Muhammad National Park (established 1983, about 480 km2 of land and sea) protects the point where the Gulf of Suez and Gulf of Aqaba meet, an area known for strong currents, over 220 recorded coral species and more than 1,000 fish species. The park's dive sites, including Shark Reef and Yolanda Reef, and the four named reefs of the nearby Straits of Tiran, are among the most visited in the northern Red Sea.
