Saint-Pierre Wrecks

Martinique

Bay of Saint-Pierre in northwest Martinique, where the 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée sank dozens of ships, leaving a protected field of historic wrecks between about 5 m and 85 m depth.

On 8 May 1902 a pyroclastic flow from Mount Pelée destroyed Saint-Pierre within minutes and sank most of the roughly 394 vessels anchored in the bay. Fishermen rediscovered the wrecks in 1960, and Jacques Cousteau's team filmed them in 1980. Archaeological surveys have confirmed at least a dozen wrecks, of which only the Tamaya, Biscaye, Roraima and Diamant are positively identified. The Roraima, a cargo ship nearly 120 m long, is the largest. The Diamant ferry and its barge lie around 30 m, the Biscaye and Teresa Lo Vigo between about 29 and 40 m, and the shallow Amélie at Anse Turin can even be snorkelled. The Dahlia, a minesweeper sunk in 1959, is the only wreck not lost in the eruption. Since 2012 the wrecks have been protected, artefacts must not be touched, and diving on the 85 m deep Tamaya is prohibited. Source: Wikipedia, Scuba Diving, NUMA
