Dive sites are abundant in the Bay of Islands. Spectacular wreck diving can be had. Poor Knights Islands is a protected marine reserve, there is stunning underwater landscape including drop offs, walls, caves, arches, tunnels and a plenty of sea life. The Coromandel Peninsula which is dotted with islands provides several healthy dive sites. Goat Island, oldest marine reserve of the country features a variety of environments, including rocky shores, deep reefs, underwater cliffs, canyons and sand flats. The South Coast is famous for Wellington shore divers. Rocky reefs and numerous marine developments make the area a striking breeding ground for a wide variety of sea life.
