Remote volcanic island southeast of Taiwan, home of the Tao people, with clear year-round water, reef-fringed drop-offs, sea caves, frequent turtles and a Korean freighter wreck.
Orchid Island lies in the Philippine Sea southeast of Taiwan and is home to the indigenous Tao people. It is surrounded by coral reefs, and the Kuroshio Current gives it some of the best year-round visibility in Taiwan. Hawksbill and green turtles are common, together with groupers and barracuda. The best-known dive is the wreck of a Korean freighter that capsized in a 1983 typhoon and lies between about 20 and 40 metres. Other sites include the Blue Hole near Kai Yuan Harbour with a swim-through and the Twin Lion sea cave. The seabed drops off steeply, so many dives suit experienced divers. Several dive centres operate on the island. Beaches are closed to water activities during the flying fish season, and Tao canoes must not be touched. Access is by small plane or ferry from Taitung.
