Bodrum Peninsula

Turquía

Aegean peninsula with a long sponge-diving heritage, where dive boats from Bodrum and Bitez visit the walls and caves of Karaada, Orak Island, offshore reefs and artificial wrecks.

The Bodrum Peninsula lies on the Aegean coast of south-western Turkey, with a 215 km coastline. Bodrum was long a town of sponge divers, and Bodrum Castle houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, founded in 1962 for finds from ancient Aegean shipwrecks. Today several dive centres in Bodrum and nearby resorts such as Bitez run daily boat dives from spring to autumn. The best known area is Karaada, an island about 6 km off the harbour, with a wall dropping to great depth, the Bubble Cave and nearby sites such as the Lighthouse and Poyraz Bay. The former coast guard vessel Pınar 1 was sunk as an artificial reef in 2007, and a military cargo aircraft followed in 2008. Further east towards the Gulf of Gökova, Orak Island offers a deep wall with caves and colourful sponges, while Kargı Island has strong currents for experienced divers.
