Belize
The largest coral atoll in Belize and in the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, located about 32 km southeast of Belize City and protected as a marine reserve since 2012.
Turneffe Atoll measures about 48 km long and 16 km wide, the largest atoll in the region. Declared a marine reserve in 2012, it protects a network of mangrove islands, creeks, lagoons and seagrass beds alongside the reef, hosting more than 500 fish species and 65 species of stony coral, sea turtles, manatees, dolphins and crocodiles.
