French Polynesia
The Tuamotu Islands are a chain of coral atolls in French Polynesia and the largest chain of atolls in the world, with Rangiroa and Fakarava as their best-known scuba diving destinations.
The Tuamotu Archipelago consists of just under 80 low coral atolls. Rangiroa, the largest atoll, is known for its Tiputa and Avatoru Passes, where shark gatherings, manta rays and dolphins are regularly encountered. Fakarava, part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2016, is known for its wide Garuae Pass and the shark-protected Tumakohua Pass, home to a large resident population of grey reef sharks.
