Ilha Grande and the surrounding Bay of Angra dos Reis form a Rio de Janeiro coastal diving region with warm, clear water, hundreds of islands, and several notable shipwrecks.
Ilha Grande is a largely forested island roughly 12 km off the coast of the municipality of Angra dos Reis, which itself contains more than three hundred islands within its bay. Known dive sites include the stone formation Laje Branca, a helicopter wreck used since 1998, and the shipwreck historically known as the Vapor Rio de Janeiro, which sank in 1866. Large parts of the island fall under the Tamoios Environmental Protection Area and Ilha Grande State Park.
