Easter Island (Rapa Nui) is a remote Chilean volcanic island roughly 3,700 km west of the mainland. Diving is concentrated near Hanga Roa, with visibility reported up to about 70 meters due to the absence of rivers or sediment runoff. The volcanic seabed produces caves, tunnels, arches, and drop-offs rather than coral reef, with comparatively low abundance but high endemism of marine species. In 2018 the Rapa Nui Marine Protected Area was established, ranked among the largest marine sanctuaries in the world.
