Greece's largest island, with a roughly 1,046 km coastline split between a more developed north shore and a quieter, steep south coast favoured for diving.
Crete stretches about 260 km east-west with a coastline of approximately 1,046 km, including Souda Bay and the Gulf of Mirabello. The north coast around Chania (Kalyves to Georgioupolis) has cave and rocky-abyss diving including the 'Cave of the Elephants', and a notable wreck near Marathi, a 183-metre passenger steamer sunk by a mine in 1916. The quieter south coast around Plakias offers rocky coves and steep drop-offs, while the eastern Lassithi region is noted for particularly rich seabeds.
