Bligh Water is a wide channel between Fiji's two largest islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, renowned as one of the world's premier soft-coral diving areas.
Bligh Water is the stretch of sea separating Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, named after Lieutenant William Bligh, who passed through it after the mutiny on the Bounty in 1789. Strong currents flush nutrient-rich water through the channel, feeding dense growths of soft corals, sea fans and other invertebrates along seamounts and pinnacles. The area includes the Vatu-i-Ra Passage, a marine protected zone known for steep drop-offs, bommies and pinnacle dive sites.
