The northern stretch of the Belize Barrier Reef anchored by Ambergris Caye and the town of San Pedro, home to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve.
Ambergris Caye is Belize's largest island, with its eastern shore running parallel to the northernmost section of the Belize Barrier Reef. Nearby Hol Chan Marine Reserve, established in 1987, protects a natural cut through the reef and adjoining mangrove zones. The Belize Barrier Reef is the second-longest barrier reef in the world and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1996.
