Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2011, is renowned for Hanifaru Bay, one of the world's largest manta ray feeding aggregations.
Baa Atoll comprises 75 islands, with 13 inhabited and several developed as resorts. Its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation recognises high diversity of reef fish, corals, marine turtles, manta rays and whale sharks. Hanifaru Bay itself is a snorkel-only protected area attracting manta aggregations of up to 200 individuals during peak season (June-November); diving is prohibited inside the bay, but nearby sites such as Dharavandhoo Corner and Dhigali Haa offer scuba access to mantas, caves and swim-throughs.
