Pelagie Islands

Italien

Remote Italian islands between Sicily and Tunisia with very clear water, caves off Lampedusa, volcanic walls off Linosa and open-water dives at Lampione, all within a marine protected area.

The Pelagie Islands are Italy's southernmost archipelago, lying in the Strait of Sicily between Malta and Tunisia. They consist of Lampedusa, Linosa and the small islet of Lampione. The Isole Pelagie Marine Protected Area, established in 2002, covers all three islands. The water is known for visibility of up to 30 metres. Lampedusa offers caves and shoals with groupers and barracudas, while volcanic Linosa has steep walls and rocky shoals dropping to about 50 metres. Lampione is visited for open-water dives. Loggerhead turtles nest on Isola dei Conigli on Lampedusa and on Linosa. Non-resident divers must dive with an authorised centre; dive centres operate on both Lampedusa and Linosa.
