Guadeloupe
Small volcanic archipelago south of Basse-Terre with about ten dive sites around Terre-de-Haut, best known for the offshore Sec Pâté pinnacles that rise from 200 m depth to 15 m below the surface.
Les Saintes is an archipelago of nine islands about 14 km south of Guadeloupe, across the Saintes Passage. Only Terre-de-Haut and Terre-de-Bas are inhabited. Dive centres in Terre-de-Haut, among them La Dive Bouteille and Pisquettes, run about ten sites around the islands, from sheltered reefs to canyon dives such as the Aquarium. The best-known site is Sec Pâté, a group of submerged pinnacles between Les Saintes and Basse-Terre. Their tops lie about 15 m below the surface, and the walls drop to some 200 m. Sponges, soft corals, overhangs and swim-throughs attract queen angelfish, ocean triggerfish, moray eels, turtles and lobsters. Because it lies offshore, Sec Pâté is exposed to swell and current and is reserved for experienced divers. Les Saintes is reached by ferry from mainland Guadeloupe or by plane.
