The Rock

This volcanic pinnacle rises out of the open water of the Apolima Strait; the former AquaSamoa centre near Mulifanua Wharf gave the boat ride as about 20 minutes, Pure Ocean as about 30. Divers first reach a small plateau at roughly 12 to 18 metres, covered mostly in hard corals and giant clams, and from 18 metres a wall of soft corals begins where the reef sharks tend to stay. Grey and whitetip reef sharks, barracuda, eagle rays and stingrays pass by, while dense schools of fusiliers and snappers accompany divers around the rock. Gorgonian sea fans, Maori wrasse and a mix of hard and soft corals complete the picture. Pure Ocean and Samoa Pocket Guide both rate this exposed site for advanced divers.
