San Quentin
Conosciuto anche come: Sunken Tin
Spanish forces sank the San Quentin in 1898 to stop the US Navy entering the shallow eastern channel near Grande Island. Storms and time have flattened most of the hull, but the bow, the stern and the upright steam boilers are still easy to recognise. After more than a century on the bottom the wreck has become a reef in its own right, overgrown with soft corals and sponges, and more than 20 nudibranch species have been recorded here. A coral reef beside the wreck holds very large giant clams. The water is usually clear, which makes the site a favourite of photographers and newly certified divers.
